Today's Blueprint
Cal AI counts calories from a food photo and does $30M/year. Here's the AI version of their business.
Cal AI is a real iOS app launched in 2024. Users snap a photo of any meal and get instant calorie and macro counts. The app charges around $10/month, hit $1M ARR in nine weeks, and is now reportedly past $30M ARR. We reverse-engineered the model and rebuilt it with AI so one person can launch their version in weeks, not years.
01 - The Real Business
How a $10/month photo-to-calories app hit $30M ARR
Cal AI launched in 2024 as a single-feature iOS app: snap a photo of any meal and get instant calorie and macro counts. Two founders in their early twenties used a vision model to recognize food and an LLM to estimate portion sizes. The app charges around $10/month. They hit $1M ARR in nine weeks and are now reportedly past $30M ARR with a tiny team.
All of that growth came from TikTok. They posted short videos showing the app counting calories on real meals, each one a 15-second demo of the magic. Every viral clip drove App Store installs. The free-to-paid conversion was high because the value showed up in the first photo.
Why this business model works
The product is the demo. A photo turns into calories in three seconds. There's nothing to read, nothing to learn. People see the magic and convert.
$10/month clears the impulse threshold. Nobody runs procurement on a ten-dollar app. With hundreds of thousands of users, that small price compounds into a real business.
The insight that makes this an AI business
Here's the key: vision models that read a meal photo are common now. The product is the iOS app, the $10/month price, and the TikTok content built around the moment of magic. AI does the recognition. The founder ships everything around it.
